We already had a number of potential suppliers from the past,
with whom we had had good experiences. Nonetheless, for this
specific project they had to prove themselves again.
After various orientation meetings and visits, we made our final
choice of partners. A number of partners also joined us during the
project, primarily due to progressive insight and modifications to
the technical design.
Creativity during construction
There was, naturally, a standard for the design of the new
factory, but a lot still had to be done for the final and detailed
engineering. We deliberately chose to further elaborate this
engineering during construction. We had too little time for this in
the preparatory phase. We also had insufficient insight into the
interaction of all the facets. This meant that many last-minute
decisions had to be made. Our partners were confronted with
changes at the last moment and rapid reactions were absolutely
essential. This evidently required a certain degree of creativity
from both our suppliers and installers. It may sound as if nothing
was defined beforehand, but nothing could be further from the
truth. The established basis proved the most important during
the project. It included various criteria from which we were un-
willing and unable to deviate under any circumstances. This creat-
ed clarity for everyone.
Going with the flow essential
It was not just the final engineering that still needed to be set
in motion; in many cases the detailed engineering was not yet
ready, either. The limited timeframe for the building meant that
all parties had to be able to rapidly respond to developments
and changes at any point in the process. There were instances
where engineering that had been almost fully detailed had to be
largely revised due to progressive insight in the overall engineering.
These are issues that are generally taken care of during
the preparation. Our preparation time was too brief, however,
so many decisions also still had to be taken during the detail
