NOISE CONTROL OF TRANSFORMERS AND REACTORS BRITISH OFFSHORE WIND PARK Transformers and shunt reactors for offshore wind Royal SMIT Transformers B.V. has over 100 years’ experience in the market for low power transformers, and focuses on the global energy market. The 'West of Duddon Sands' offshore wind park is close to Morecambe Bay in the eastern part of the Irish Sea. It comprises 108 wind turbines with a total capacity of 389 megawatts. Thanks to the wind park, 270,000 British households have access to clean and sustainable energy. For the onshore grid connection at Heysham in England, SMIT supplied two transformers and two shunt reactors. Due to strict noise requirements at the location, Merford was contracted by SMIT for the design, engineering, production and on-site installation of four casings. Project methodology In the design phase, Merford supplied to SMIT the necessary noise calculations and 3D simulations of the housings. This gave the end client a realistic and convincing idea of the housings’ performance, functionality and user-friendliness. When designing noise housings for transformers and shunt reactors, the focus is on the functionality and access philosophy of the OEM and end user. The ultimate proof of the functionality and noisereduction levels was achieved through the factory acceptance test process that tested the combination of the units and the housings. The project was completed with the successful installation of the housings by Merford on site. ON BEHALF OF ROYAL SMIT TRANSFORMERS, MERFORD NOISE CONTROL RECENTLY DEVELOPED A NUMBER OF SOUNDPROOF CASINGS FOR THE HIGH-VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS AND SHUNT REACTORS OF AN OFFSHORE WIND PARK IN THE UK. THE CASINGS ARE EQUIPPED WITH A SOUNDPROOF VENTILATION SYSTEM.
